The University of Kentucky Department of Radiology is proud to offer a fellowship in Women’s Radiology/Breast Imaging. This non-ACGME accredited fellowship is a one-year program and offers one fellowship spot per year.
OUR BREAST IMAGING CENTER
The University of Kentucky Department of Radiology provides women’s radiology services at the Markey Comprehensive Breast Care Center (CBCC) located on the Chandler Medical Center campus. The Comprehensive Breast Care Center is a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology, accredited in Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Breast MRI, and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. It is the first health care provider in Kentucky, and one of the first in the United States, to offer tomosynthesis. This leading-edge technology is the next level in breast imaging and has revolutionized how breast cancer is detected.
OUR TRAINING PROGRAM
The ultimate goal of the Women’s Radiology Fellowship Program is to fully prepare fellow graduates to assume the role of lead interpreting physician in any breast imaging facility. Training includes all aspects of breast imaging including screening and diagnostic mammography with tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and interventional procedures, including percutaneous procedures (stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI-guided core biopsies, vacuum assisted biopsies, cyst aspirations, fine needle aspirations, and needle localizations). Fellows also have the opportunity to spend elective time in Breast Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Therapy, and Breast Pathology.
The Women’s Radiology fellow plays an important role in the multidisciplinary approach to breast care and actively participate in multidisciplinary conferences, resident and medical student teaching, as well as clinical research and quality improvement. In support of these pursuits, fellows are provided with faculty mentorship, instruction in research design/analytic methods, and one-half day of dedicated academic time per week, on average. Fellows are also provided with the opportunity to attend a national scientific meeting (fully funded) and are expected to submit at least one journal manuscript during the fellowship year.
Specific learning objectives include:
- Obtain subspecialty expertise in the protocoling and interpretation of all aspects of breast imaging including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, tomosynthesis and interventional procedures, including percutaneous procedures (stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI-guided core biopsies, vacuum assisted biopsies, cyst aspirations, fine needle aspirations, and needle localizations).
- Learn the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology and treatment of breast cancer.
- Communicate effectively with patients, including how to recommend biopsy, how to explain a cancer diagnosis, and how to develop sensitivity to patients’ emotional needs.
- Interact proficiently with surgeons, pathologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists in providing multidisciplinary care.
- Be familiar with federal accreditation and regulatory roles in breast imaging including peer review standards and quality control measures.
- Be involved in all aspects of the Department’s academic and research activities, including the teaching of medical students and residents and participation in scholarly/research/quality improvement projects.

Downtown Lexington is home to a vibrant theatre district, high-end eateries and restaurants as well as the nationally famous Rupp Arena.
